recovery from eating disorders

Why does it feel like everyone is anti-recovery?

It’s like we live in this world where everyone is either dieting, jumping on a health trend, or counting calories. Wanting to “feel healthy” is great, but the pressure to fall into some standard of health is overwhelming.

If this post resonates with you or makes you feel something, share it with a friend! My hope is that we can keep this important conversation going long after the post is over.

Everyone seems to have an opinion, you've probably encountered unsolicited advice and opinions from well-meaning (or not-so-well-meaning) friends or family.

But here's the thing – You are not on a mission to help them see the world the way that you do. You are not on a mission to help them understand intuitive eating and eating disorder recovery.

Yet, even if you feel compelled to say something, remember: this is about you, not them.

In this episode, I'm diving into:

  • Challenges people face when living in a diet-obsessed world.

  • The pressure people feel when trying to work towards a healthier relationship with food and their bodies.

  • Not engaging in conversations with others that try to change your perspective on intuitive eating or recovery.

  • Affirmations or mantras to help create a positive internal dialogue.

  • The importance of focusing on personal goals & avoiding external distractions.

  • Recognizing and labeling disordered thinking to avoid getting trapped in negative thought patterns.

  • Creating distance from diet-focused conversations.

  • Creating a support system and connecting with like-minded individuals outside of diet-centric environments.

  • Identifying your triggers in diet-focused situations.

"This is not about them. This is about you. Don't engage in conversation, even if it's an attempt to stand up for yourself." - Rachelle Heinemann

"If the comment is directed toward you... do yourself a favor and don't engage." - Rachelle Heinemann

"You are not alone, and it doesn't mean that you won't get better. You can do it. And I know that it's incredibly difficult, and I know that it poses some really complicated challenges. You can do it. You absolutely can." - Rachelle Heinemann
